Il Nano-Scratch Tester è largamente usato per caratterizzare la mancata adesione di film sottili e di coating, con uno spessore tipico inferiore agli 800 nanometri. Il Nano-Scratch Tester viene anche usato per l'analisi di coating organici e inorganici, soffici e duri. Gli esempi comprendono PVD sottili e multistrato, CVD, PECVD, fotoresist, vernici, lacche e molti altri tipi di film, usati come copertura di elementi ottici o microelettronica, per protezione o decorazione o per altre applicazioni. I substrati possono essere duri o soffici e comprendono le leghe metalliche, i semiconduttori, il vetro e i materiali refrattari e organici.
